ABOUT ALPACAS

Alpacas, llamas, guanacos and vicunas are part of the camel (camelid) family and originate from South America. There are about three million alpacas worldwide and about five thousand in New Zealand.

Alpaca fibre is referred to as the ‘Fibre of the Gods’ due to the fact that it produces one of the most luxurious and valuable fibres in the world. The unique combination of softness, strength, thermal qualities and colour have created a worldwide interest from both the manufacturer through to the spinner and weaver.

The adorable and intelligent alpaca is reverred by everyone with a love of animals and lifestyle farmers have sent prices to new heights.

Silverstream is a member of the Alpaca Association New Zealand, Australian Alpaca Association and the American Owners and Breeders Association.
